Product Description

With mobile phones getting ever smaller, they are increasingly being used in areas where they may compromise security. This technology is also becoming the preferred medium for bugs and other surveillance devices.

To combat these problems, PDA Electronics has developed the CPD186 mobile phone detector which is designed to sweep varying sized areas and detects activity from mobile phone transceivers.

The CPD186 is especially suitable:
•  for use by security personnel in Government establishments, military bases, and prisons;
•  in commercial applications such as banking, dealing rooms, and design offices;
•  for security companies who need to sweep premises for concealed surveillance devices.

 Display Options
You can set the CPD186’s sensitivity to match the area to be scanned.

An internal switch allows you to choose the sensitivity of the bargraph display, with signal strength increments either in 2dB or 3dB per LED. This in turn sets the display to either a 10dB or a 15dB window.

This lets you detect and locate mobile phones or surveillance units in different sized areas and in a variety of conditions.

 Sensitivity / Detection Ranges
The CPD186 allows the user to select one of 5 sensitivity ranges from the front panel switch. The unit can be set initially to the High setting (-60dBm) in order to get detection at the maximum range. The unit offers a degree of directionality so as you move towards the indicated source of the signal the display will quickly reach the maximum strength. Beyond this point no further useful information can be obtained. The sensitivity can now reduced one step using the front panel switch and search continues until again the display reaches maximum. This process can be repeated until a range which provides the required resolution is achieved. One of the LEDs will flash in the absence of an alarm to indicate the unit is active and which level of sensitivity the unit is set to. When the unit is turned off it remembers the last setting.

*Ranges given are for full-power( 1watt ) operation in the open air. In practice, handsets minimize their power dynamically:the closer the base stations the less power the handsets need to transmit. Some US handsets are limited to 560mW. European GSM900 handsets can operate at 2 watts.
Walls and other structures also attenuate the signals.
These factors mean that actual detection ranges may vary from than those given above.

Specifications

Phone Standards Detected
IS-41 Analog(AMPS), IS-95 (CDMA), IS-136 (D-AMPS /TDMA ), Motorola iDEN systems (both Connect and Dispatch), GSM850. GSM900, GSM1800 and GSM1900

Frequency Sweep
The CPD186 searches for mobile phone activity from 700MHz – 2500MHz.
Advanced digital filters reject signals not conforming to the above mobile phone standards.

Detection Method
Pulse envelope demodulation with Digital Signal Processing.
Unique detection algorithms prevent false alarms and allow strong signals to be picked up and weaker signals suppressed.

Battery Life
Typically 180-200* hours of operation
* this figure allows for several alarm conditions per day. If the vibration alarm is allowed to function for long periods this will impact battery life.

Auto-Power Off
The unit automatically powers itself off after 12 hours.

LED Indications
Typically 80 hours' operation. Auto power-off after 12 hours. Low battery indicates that the 2x LR1 / N cells should be replaced.
Bargraph
The 5 segment bar graph indicates the presence of a mobile phone and the approximate range to the source of the transmissions. The segments are colour coded for easy identification in low light situations. Each of the LEDs are used as Active indications depending on the sensitivity switch setting as well as showing RF activity. Flashing LEDs indicate a digital phone signal and it’s receive strength detected by the CPD186 The bargraph is also used to display Analog transmissions as a column of lights. Analog indications can be displayed simultaneously with the indication and strength of an active digital cellphone.
Low Batt
Indicates that battery voltage is low and that the batteries should be replaced.

On / Reset Switch
This switch provides multiple functions.
•  A single press will activate the unit.
•  Once an alarm condition has commenced and vibrator is functioning, the vibrator can be temporarily silenced by a single press during the alarm. The vibrator is automatically re-instated when another alarm condition is detected.
•  To move to next range press and hold the button until the next LED starts flashing, then release the button. If the button is continually pressed the unit will cycled through all the 5 range settings and then switch OFF.

Internal Switches
DIP switches on the circuit board allow the user to select the following

Switch 1 Function
ON Display set to increment in 3dB steps
OFF Display set to increment in 2dB steps
Switch 2 Function
ON n/a
OFF n/a
